The 54TH Annual Southern Amputee Golf Championship
Hosted In New Port Richey, Florida At Seven Springs Golf & Country Club

by Mike Hudson

The Southern Amputee Golf Association or S.A.G.A. had it's beginnings in 1957 in Warm Springs, GA. The Franklin Roosevelt foundation hosted and housed all participants and families on the premises. The foundations course was a menacing 9-Hole Lay-Out with two sets of tees designed for the President by Donald Ross.
Joe Avans and Several friends, primarily World War II Veterans, held the first golf outing and little did they realize this tournament would survive the test of time. Allowing amputee golfers to not only enjoy the game, but also to provide inspiration and encouragement to all with disabilities.
This 2010 event, once again, displayed what can be accomplished when a person sets his or her mind on achieving goals no matter what circumstances prevail. Players like Mike Carver from Holcomb, MS shooting 78 in the opening round. Mikes accomplishments are awesome when you consider he plays the game with 1-Arm - 1-Leg and 2 1/2 Fingers.
Also, participating was Pennsylvania's Kelly Valentine, an above elbow 1-Arm amputee young lady whose swing was the envy of all who witnessed. John Novak, a Seven Springs member and arm amputee, was the overall champion shooting a final round 74 to overtake Mike Carver. The competition was impressive the camaraderie and mutual respect was something to behold.
Designed by premier architect Ron Garl, the semi-private Seven Springs Golf and Country Club is located just outside Florida's metropolitan hub of Tampa Bay, close to the Gulf of Mexico beaches and many nearby area attractions. With 36 holes of fantastic golf which include the lush fairways and manicured greens at their par 72 Championship golf course, and a par 64 Executive course nestled among majestic pine, tawny cypress stands and a host of shimmering lakes.
One of Pasco County’s most popular golf courses, Seven Springs Golf and Country Club also offers its members and their guests fine dining and practice facilities that include a state-of-the-art driving range, putting green, and chipping/pitching area.
