The Golden Bear Tour was founded based on Jack Nicklaus' belief that aspiring Nike and PGA TOUR players could benefit not only from keen competition on solid golf courses, but also from expert physical conditioning and sports psychology. We grew from 82 players in 1996 to 180 competitors in 1999. The 1999 players represented 29 states and eight countries, and competed for a total purse of $2.5 million.
